Alex

Alex

Harvard Summer School at Fudan: a memorable experience

Alex

Three days ago, when Professor Lue declared the summer school closed, I could not believe that time flied so quickly. During the six-week summer school, I have experienced the courses from Harvard University that are so different from those in Fudan.

It was in Jul 7th, my 21th birthday, that we had our first class "living science" and "vital statistics". "Living science" addresses how life science research impact our lives in the context of US, India and China and three corresponding avatars. In each class, or "meeting" as we call it, three to four students give presentations on different topics on the basis of  assigned readings and their selection of additional readings. When I got the first book  of assigned readings, I took it for the reading material for the entire summer session. However, it was actually for the first two classes! Some of the reading material was quite long, especially those from social science, which poses a challenge to my reading ability. I was scared. I doubted whether I could handle so many readings. But I did go through those readings and became accustomed to reading long social science papers.

The first presentation I gave focused on the origin of HIV and how it came to human through zoonosis. Before the presentation, our group had dicussion with our TF Albert and Professor Lue to decide upon subtopics and what to focus. After that, we read through papers and wrote summaries and ppts. During my presentaion, I was a bit nervous but still confident. The presentation was supposed to last for 20 minutes, which is challenging for me and many Fudan students I guess. But I made it and brought the two questions I raised into discussion.

Frankly speaking, taking the course "living science" is no easy task. We need to finish reading materials and think about questions raised by presenters before each class. We shall take an active part in dicsussion in class where our Harvard colleagues are often the first to raise their hands. In a word, we need to be diligent and "brave".

The "vital statistics" course was a great fun. We have all kinds of interesting issues as the backdrop to bring out the topics in each class. Viagra, Fen-phen and Vioxx are three "amazing" drugs that are used to introduce points in statistics. We have also touched on several fallacies that people tend to make in interpretation of data. The exampled we used were all from real life and published papers. Calculations in this course was simple. Concepts and  understanding of statistics were really the key points we should grasp.

The group project for stat class is a precious experience for me. My group was initially composed of four Chinese students but no Harvard student. Later, Sandy, a girl full of passion, joined our group. I still remember the day when I opened the mailbox and saw a project proposal delivered at 4 am. Without her help and participation, we would have ended up running short of time and making a fragmented report.

Presenting screening policy for a disease with real world data requires not only biological perspective, in terms of screening techniques, but also statistical calculation, which is the major issue in this project. We have to decide which data set to use and which to abandon. The depth of the project should be maintainded at a point where you can clarify the problem, suggest policies and avoid considering every detail to make the calculation too complicated. We should also make use of the knowledge we have learned as much as possible but should not make the means the end. This is the disparity I had with one of our group member. If I had more time, I could have made our project more coherent.

Here I want to mention Yves, our TF of "vital statistics" who prepared the slides and TF section during the summer. He was really talented to make every slide clear and coherent. The TF section was also well organized that we can have a clearer understanding of the points we met in class and get some extension. I believe that he has been the "star" for all girls and most boys in stat class.

Six weeks is too short a period. But we still have had much fun learning and playing with our friends from Harvard. I want to express my gratitude to Robert, Xiaoli and Zhiliang for your wonderful lectures. I want to express my sincere thanks to Albert and Yves for your TF sections and lectures. I want to thank Huihua, Sandy and all advisors who make this program possible. And I want to thank my group member Sandy, Kai, CC and Chuan. Thank you to all Harvard students in this program. I hope I will meet you guys again!

Alex

Alex
